Description

A timeless dish that combines tender meatballs with a creamy sauce, perfect for family gatherings or cozy dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ounces fresh crustless bread crumbs
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 4 1/2 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 2/3 cup finely chopped yellow onion
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 3/4 pound 85% lean ground beef
  • 3/4 pound ground pork
  • 3 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and prepare a baking sheet lined with parchment.
  2. Combine the bread crumbs with nutmeg, allspice, cardamom, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Pour in the milk and let soak for a few minutes.
  3. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté the onions until softened, about 4-5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  4. Mix the soaked bread crumbs, sautéed onion and garlic mixture, ground beef, and ground pork. Add the egg yolks and mix well until fully incorporated.
  5. Form the mixture into meatballs, about 1–1/2 inches in diameter, and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until thoroughly cooked and golden brown.
  7. Melt the remaining butter in the skillet. Whisk in the flour, cooking for a minute. Gradually pour in the beef broth, whisking to create a smooth sauce.
  8. Stir in the heavy cream and Worcestershire sauce, simmering until thickened, about 5–7 minutes.
  9. Combine the meatballs with the sauce, stirring to coat. Serve warm.

Notes

Consider accompanying with homemade mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
