- 2–3 tablespoons heavy cream
- Pinch of salt (for frosting)
- 8 oz (225g) fondant, white or ivory (for horns)
- Edible gold paint or gold luster dust mixed with clear alcohol (like vodka)
- Food-safe paintbrush
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 8-inch cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.
- Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until fluffy.
- Add the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
- Beat softened butter for frosting in a bowl, gradually adding powdered sugar, vanilla, salt, and heavy cream until fluffy.
- Roll the fondant into cone shapes for the horns and let them dry before painting with edible gold.
- Assemble the cake by layering with frosting and placing the golden horns on top.
Notes
For a citrus twist, add fresh lemon or orange zest to the batter. To store, wrap tightly in plastic wrap or place in an airtight container.
