Description

A rich and delicious meat sauce that’s ready in just 30 minutes, perfect for a cozy weeknight dinner.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 preferred)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped small
  • 3 to 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce or splash of water
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Pinch of sugar (optional)
  • Red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Parmesan rind (optional)
  • Fresh basil or parsley (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Start a big pot of salted water for pasta first.
  2. Brown the beef over medium-high heat, breaking it up until slightly golden.
  3. Add onion and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until softened.
  4. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Stir in tomato paste and let it cook for 1 minute.
  6. Pour in crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce, then add Italian seasoning, oregano, salt, pepper, and a pinch of sugar.
  7. Simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

Notes

Let the beef brown well for flavor. Use pasta water to adjust sauce thickness.
