Description

A cozy and rich French onion soup made effortlessly in the slow cooker, perfect for chilly nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large yellow onions, sliced
  • 4 tablespoons butter or olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 8 cups beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 splash of white wine (optional)
  • 4 slices of crusty bread
  • 1 cup Gruyere or Swiss cheese, grated

Instructions

  1. Slice the onions evenly.
  2. Toss them in the slow cooker with butter and a pinch of salt.
  3. Cook until soft and golden, stirring occasionally.
  4. Add the broth and seasonings, then let it cook longer to blend flavors.
  5. Toast the bread.
  6. Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls, top with cheese, and broil until bubbly.

Notes

Toast the bread more than you think to prevent sogginess. Use freshly grated cheese for better melting.
