- 8 cups beef or vegetable broth

- 4 slices of crusty bread
- 1 cup Gruyere or Swiss cheese, grated
Instructions
- Slice the onions evenly.
- Toss them in the slow cooker with butter and a pinch of salt.
- Cook until soft and golden, stirring occasionally.
- Add the broth and seasonings, then let it cook longer to blend flavors.
- Toast the bread.
- Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls, top with cheese, and broil until bubbly.
Notes
Toast the bread more than you think to prevent sogginess. Use freshly grated cheese for better melting.
