Description

Delightful holiday cookies that combine the flavors of buttery dough and peppermint, perfect for family gatherings.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Red gel food coloring, as needed
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar (for rolling)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the egg, then mix in the vanilla and peppermint extracts.
  3. Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Divide the dough in half, leaving one half plain and coloring the other with red gel food coloring.
  5. Wrap both portions of dough in plastic wrap and chill for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Roll 1 teaspoon of each the red and plain dough into 4-inch ropes.
  8. Twist the red and white ropes together and shape into candy canes or rings.
  9. Roll cookies in granulated sugar and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  10. Bake for 8–10 minutes until just set, then cool for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

These cookies can taste even better the next day as flavors meld together. Store in an airtight container at room temperature or refrigerate for freshness.
